Save Money When Purchasing Your Heating Oil Are you interested in saving money on your domestic heating oil? If the answer is YES you might be interested to know about a scheme that is operating across Lincolnshire helping its members to do just that! Community Lincs have run their Community Oil buying Scheme for the last 3 years, saving its members on average around 5p per litre on their heating oil. The scheme is open to anyone in the county who uses heating oil to heat their homes and premises. The scheme works by bringing together oil buyers from around county and purchasing the oil collectively, with around 40,000 litres of oil being ordered each month. The scheme is only £20 per year to join and includes advice on how to keep your tank safe from thieves and the benefit of their Oil Theft Alert System. Community Lincs also work alongside the Lincolnshire Credit Union, or Lincup, who have devised an Oil Savers Scheme to allow members to put aside money each month for their oil purchases. What is CallConnect Bus Service? CallConnect is a unique bus service whose timetable is not fixed but responds to passenger requests. This means its routes are different each day depending on the bookings made by passengers. Journey requests can be made by telephone, online or by SMS text message. The service is designed to improve transport opportunities in rural communities and some market towns where there is an infrequent conventional bus services. Who can use CallConnect? It is so good to see more people out and about now that the bluebells are blooming and the trees are coming back to life. Spring is certainly here at last. The programme of renovations and improvements are continuing at the hall with our frontage looking Spring like too. Over the last six years many of you have helped with our collection of plastic bottle tops, which have helped to buy wheelchairs for children and the Air Ambulance. Sadly our contact has now retired and as a result we are no longer collecting bottle tops. Thank you for all your help. We shall still be collecting used postage stamps for the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, in the box inside the hall. On May 23rd at 7pm. we shall be holding our AGM in the conference room at the Memorial Hall and would love to see you there to hear the reports of the work of the Committee and the election of officers. We are always looking for new people to help with the running of the Memorial Hall and the AGM is an ideal time to come along and volunteer. A big thank you to all of you who continue to support the 59 Club both long standing and new members, it is always a pleasure to meet the winners every week and it provides a valuable source of income for the Memorial Hall. The Hall Diary, in this newsletter gives you details of all the regular activities at the hall where newcomers are always welcome. THE 59 CLUB. standrew.helpringham@gmail.com JOHN'S JOTTINGS – THE PEW VIEW As we look around the village we cannot help but see the spring flowers abounding giving us a sense of rebirth and a great expectation of the summer ahead. It’s the same every year sometimes earlier sometimes later but it never lets us down. The pattern of our services in church similarly follow the weather cycle. After the joy of Christmas we have to contend with dismal January leading us into Epiphany and thus to Lent, a period of denial but with the weather improving and the expectation of Easter this gives us a sense of re-birth just like the resurrection, with eggs into the bargain. The Easter season lasts seven weeks so it will be Whit Sunday before we head into Pentecost and the holiday period of Whitsuntide. Each week we celebrate some aspect of Jesus’s life and ministry illustrated with stories rotating on a three year cycle. Why not come along at 11.00am second and fourth Sundays or for a light-hearted Songs of Praise on fifth Sundays. Services last about 40 minutes. You will be made very welcome. Cakes, tea and a chat after with Helpringham people, always a pleasant prospect! Every Blessing THE WARDEN'S TWITTERINGS It was good to see so many people at the Mothering Sunday and Easter Sunday services in the church. Thank you to all those who donated for the Easter Lillies which gave a spring like quality to the service and our appreciation to the flower arrangers for the displays. A reminder that the Parochial Church Council will be holding its Annual General Meeting in the church on Thursday 7th April at 7pm. Anyone on the church's electorial roll is welcome to attend.
Very Best wishes and every blessing from the Parochial Church Council of St Andrew’s Church HELPRINGHAM PETTICOAT CLUB NEWS Our April meeting was a very pleasant evening with Derek Harris who took us on a thoroughly enjoyable imaginary visit to a pub “on the cut” where we met a variety of characters who shared their stories of life on the canals in song and tales. Derek, a master of disguise even got us all singing along. He has written three books on canal life and characters and the proceeds of these go in part to The Foxton Lock Trust he supports as did half of his fee. All the members present were completely entertained and left with big smiles on their faces. At the beginning of the meeting a cheque for £574 was presented to Ann from Heckington L.I.V.E.S the funds we have raised over the last year, a huge thank you to all of you who supported our various fund raising events last year. All those present were also given copies of the minutes from our AGM in March. Our next meeting also promises to be interesting with Denise Taylor telling us all about Medical Detection Dogs. New members will always be very welcome.
April 2016 Meeting. This was another well attended meeting with equal numbers of players and “listeners.” The players got to play 6 tunes each and everyone enjoyed the evening. Most players come prepared to play 4 numbers and it is always interesting watching reactions when, as at this meeting, there is time to play more and they have to make a decision on what to play next. Some tunes are a lot more challenging to play than others and may not be as well rehearsed, but I have to say everyone came up trumps. It must have been a bit like that for The Shadows in the early days of recording. Back then studio techniques were quite different, everything was played live as a band and studio time was limited. Often tunes were quite raw and unrehearsed, for instance “The Savage” had an improvised solo in the middle and it turned out a bit different each time Hank played it. It is also a challenging number for the rest of the band as the rhythm guitar, bass and drums are all fast. After several attempts I think it was eventually take 57 when they actually got a recording they were all happy with!! Sometimes if time was limited they just took the best take, even if it was not perfect. “Man of Mystery” is one such example – the released recording has a dead note in the main melody. Compare that to today when a band can take months just to make one track with sampling and multitracking. It is even possible to insert or modify individual notes to make a perfect recording. It might be perfect, but to me it can often sound a bit sterile and lacking the energy and “rawness” of the earlier techniques when “what you saw was what you got!” Meetings are held at the Memorial Hall from 7:30pm to 10:30pm on the first Wednesday of every month. Next meeting is Wednesday 4th May. Entry is £3 for guitar players and you just need to bring your guitar. Everything else is provided, backing tracks, echo machines, PA system. Or, if you have your own backing tracks they, can be accommodated on CD, minidisc, USB stick, mp3 player, smartphone or iPad etc. You don’t need to play - you can just come and listen, have a chat, swap a few memories. Entry is just £2 for non players and light refreshments are included. Dave Moore HELPRINGHAM AND DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB The Garden Club started 2016 with a fun Social. The Year's programme begins in earnest on 24th. February For the coming year we have a varied programme with talks ranging from Victorian Gardens We have two evening visits arranged and one day Coach trip.
