Following a demonstration by LIVES on the revolutionary Defibrillator members of the Petticoat Club resolved to raise funds to install one for village use. To this end members will be collecting for ‘The De-Fib Fund’
What is a defibrillator? Well many of you who learned first aid will know how to attempt resuscitation by so many chest pumps plus breaths into the mouth etc.. We were told that unless you got a response within 6 minutes you were wasting your time. Well the Defibrillator will do the job for you by measuring the existing heart flutters, administering a jolt and righting the heart beat. Not quite ‘magic’ but very near. You may have seen yellow boxes on walls in many villages round and about. To buy a machine and install it will cost £200 which is approximately £5 per house in Helpringham.
We have collecting boxes in the Post Office, the Memorial Hall and The Nags and we hope you will give generously. After all it could be your life that is saved. Surely you would give £5 to save anyone’s life? Wouldn’t you?

As we get older and our vital organs begin to wear out a bit we do our best to take care of ourselves with the help of medics. Sometimes, though, it is a young person whose heart suddenly stops while they are laying football or cricket. A defibrillator close by could save them. Let us hope it is never needed but if it is, let us be confident that we have done our best for the patient.

FEAST WEEKEND AT St ANDREWS.

We would like to thank everyone who supported the St Andrew's during the Feast Weekend. 
The weekend started on Friday evening with a brass band concert given by 'Vintage Brass'.  The concert included some World War One songs and marches with everyone able to join in and wave their flags.
The Helpringham History Society put on a very interesting exhibition of 'Helpringham in 1914' with many artefacts that had not seen the light of day for many years together with some very interesting photographs showing long forgotten views of the village from the early part of the 1900's.  The display of costumes and haberdashery items proved to be very popular especially with some of the members in period dress.

While the weather was fine many people took the opportunity to climb to the top of the church tower to see the Parish Clock, bells and view the village from above.  Because it was clear the view was stunning and well worth the 100 steps.

Congratulations to Julie Johnson and Maureen Collishaw who got the most correct answers.  Thank you to all of the ladies who constructed the displays and interpreted a challenging theme.
A big thank you should be given those who  provided and served the refreshments over the whole weekend.  What would we have done without them? 
The weekend rounded off with a rousing 'Songs of Praise' service led by Rev. Chris.  The congregation had chosen their favourite hymns to be sung with the choir. 

The weekend raised just over £1100 and this will be donated to local causes as well being used for the upkeep of the Church.

HECKINGTON AREA VOLUNTARY CAR SCHEME

HAVCS are looking for drivers to take patients to hospital and doctor’s surgeries. Do you have a few hours to spare a week to do this worthwhile job? 45p per mile is paid. Contact Richard Higgs on 460027. The voluntary car scheme is for patients who do not have access to a car of their own or are unable to drive due to illness. The telephone, 460809, is operated from 8.30 am to 10 am Monday to Friday and there is an answer phone service after 10 am. Do not ring the drivers.

What is CallConnect Bus Service?                                                    

CallConnect is a unique bus service whose timetable is not fixed but responds to passenger requests. This means its routes are different each day depending on the bookings made by passengers.  Journey requests can be made by telephone, online or by SMS text message. The service is designed to improve transport opportunities in rural communities and some market towns where there is an infrequent conventional bus services.                                                                                                 

 Who can use CallConnect?                                                              
Everyone! All are welcome to use the service regardless of age or status. You can use the service as frequently as required for anything from shopping or travelling to work or school to a social event or medical appointment. Even if you are on holiday in Lincolnshire and need a bus, contact our booking office and find out how we can help you.                        

How do I book a journey?                                                                      
You can book a CallConnect journey by calling our booking team on 0845 234 3344. When requesting a bus journey, have your membership number and journey details ready. You can also submit your travel requests online or via SMS text messages. You can make a booking up to seven days in advance. You can also request same-day journeys but please give a minimum of one hour’s notice. All bookings are subject to availability.    

Fares                                                                                                        
The amount you pay to travel depends on your journey. Each service area is divided into zones – the further you travel, the more you pay. Booking office staff can tell you the cost of your journey so that you can have the correct fare ready. Children aged under 5 travel free with an accompanying adult. If you hold a valid concessionary bus pass due to age or disability, you can use it on CallConnect buses. Passes issued outside Lincolnshire are accepted during off-peak travel (after 9.30am).                

Opening and Operating Times                                                      
CallConnect operates 7am-7pm, Monday-Friday, and 8am-6pm on Saturdays. Details of any local variations are available from the booking office. The booking office is open from 8.30am-7pm, Monday-Friday; 8.30am-5pm on Saturday; and closed Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Our vehicles are fitted with low-floor steps and tail-lifts to ensure they are as easy as possible for everyone to use. Wheelchair users must inform us of the make and model to ensure it meets our safety standard of being impact-tested. Travel in a wheelchair is subject to availability and approval.

Memorial Hall News

What a lovely summer we have had, mostly! Many of you have been away and hopefully are refreshed and ready for the forthcoming autumn and winter.
Committee members have, over the summer, continued to work on the maintenance and improvements at the Memorial Hall, which is now looking good.
All our regular clubs will be running and they all would welcome new members. Don’t forget to check the notice board at the front of the Hall for details of these and contact numbers.
Our next event is a joint venture with St Andrew’s Church.

We do hope you will come along and join in. It promises to be a fun night.

NEWS FROM THE PEWS
Thanks for the feast.
Many thanks to our church wardens Marian and Vince Stocking and their team of willing helpers who decorated the church, made and served the lovely cakes and refreshments and did the inventive flower arrangements that depicted songs from the war years. Thanks also to the local history society for their very interesting displays of scenes of Helpringham life in 1914, and the costumes that helped bring history to life. Also thanks to John and Vince who took people up the tower to experience the view and the many others who helped on the village green on the Saturday. It was a lovely village occasion enjoyed by many.   
Fork handles?
The day after the Feast, a coach load of us enjoyed a lovely day at Walsingham in Norfolk. We went for a day’s pilgrimage, to connect with the sacred sense of peace at a place that has been the destination of pilgrims for many centuries and to enjoy a day out. For those who wanted, there was the option to join in some of various pilgrim rituals like walking the Holy Mile and the Stations of the Cross (which is a meditation on Jesus’ journey of suffering from the point of arrest and trial to his execution at the place of the skull outside Jerusalem), or being sprinkled with water from the holy well. Most of us lit a candle at the shrine chapel for someone, as a way of remembering or praying for someone who is going through a dark time in their life. At both the Anglican and Roman Catholic chapels they get through hundreds of thousands of candles every year, as lighting a candle has once again become a popular ritual for those who have faith and those who don’t. At our churches we too get through quite a few candles every year but are always left with the bit at the end. These are now piling up in the vestry and rather than just throw them out I would like to pass them on to someone who can make use of them, perhaps someone who makes candles and can recycle the wax. So if you are a local candle maker and can use them, please do get in touch with me (460904), as they’re going free to a good home. As the old wartime saying goes, “waste not want not”.    
Sponsored Cycle ride
The Lincolnshire Old Churches Trust are holding their annual sponsored ride or stride around the county’s amazing heritage of ancient churches on Saturday 13th September from 10am to 4pm. It’s an opportunity to dust off the old cycle, pump up the tyres, and oil the chain before setting off on your own tour of local churches. Sponsorship forms are on the table just inside the church. All the churches in our group will be open so why not make a day of it and discover some local historic gems.        
60’s Music Evening at Helpringham
On Saturday 20th September there is a 60’s music evening at Helpringham Memorial Hall at 7pm with the local Shadow’s guitar group providing the entertainment. Funds are to be shared between the hall and St Andrew’s church. Tickets are £7 inc light supper and are available from Marian (421395) and Laraine.
Arnhem 70 - Heckington Remembers
Continuing the wartime theme of the feast weekend, at the end of September, Heckington village is commemorating the 70th anniversary of the battle at Arnhem in September 1944, as there were a number of men billeted near the village before the famous airdrop took place. Heckington church will be open with displays about the campaign from Thursday 25th September till the Sunday afternoon. Amongst a number of other events, there will be an act of remembrance at the war memorial on Sunday 28th September at 2.30pm followed by a service of commemoration in St Andrew’s church at 3pm.
Thank God for the harvest
Helpringham’s Harvest service is in church on Friday 3rd October at 6.30pm and the supper will be at the memorial hall on Saturday 4th at 6.30pm. Tickets for the supper from Marian & Vince

CLERK’S NOTES OF THE MEETING HELD WEDNESDAY, 13 August AT 7.30PM AT HELPRINGHAM MEMORIAL HALL

Present:  Cllr G Hotchkin (Chairman), Cllr A Bourne, Cllr J Frizzell, Cllr P Johnson, Cllr R Spencer, Cllr S Ogden (District Councillor) present until item 6, and the Clerk, Mrs P Ireland

The meeting started at 7.30pm as no-one attended the Public Speaking Time

• Declarations of Interest – None

• Signing of minutes:

Minutes of the meeting held on 9 July were accepted as a true record of that meeting.  Prop Cllr Bourne and seconded Cllr Spencer.  All in favour.

• County/District/Police Matters:

Cllr Hotchkin asked Cllr Ogden if, further to a report in the local press, it was true that NKDC had obtained extra funding for affordable housing.  If this was the case, would there be funding available to upgrade the footpath on School Lane leading to the new development. Cllr Ogden commented that the footpath would be completed according to the spec passed by Highways.
Due to concerns about the safety of the proposed footpath, it was agreed that a letter be sent to the Head of Housing and Community at NKDC.  Cllr Ogden asked that he be copied in to the letter.

Due to a delay in planning the development would not begin until 25 August.

It was proposed by Cllr Johnson to bring item 10 on the agenda (Planning Applications) forward so that Cllr Ogden would be able to leave after.   All in favour.

• Chairman / Vice Chairman’s Report:
• Dog Bin – Thanks were recorded for Cllr Watts for remounting the bin.
• Dog fouling – Cllr Johnson to include in the next newsletter.
• Defibrillator fund – Cllr Johnson had advised the group raising funds for the defibrillator, that they apply in October so a donation could be included in the budget, if approved.  Section 137 money would be applicable. 

• Openness of Local Government Bodies Regs 2014:

The new regulations, which became stautory on 6 August, had been circulated.  Standing Orders need to be amended to allow members of the public or press to photograph, record or film parish council meetings. 
Cllr Johnson proposed that this be accepted.  Seconder Cllr Frizzell.  All in favour.
The Clerk to draft a new standing order. 

• Village Benches:

Cllr Bourne reported that:

• A volunteer had offered to re-varnish the bench on North Fen Road.  The work will be undertaken at the home of the volunteer.  All in agreement.
•  A family from the village were wishing to purchase a bench and donate it to the village.  The Clerk had obtained prices of recycled benches, to minimise any future maintenance.

• Cemetery Matters:
• A different mower being used to cut the grass
• A volunteer had cut the hedges.  The Clerk to write and thank him.
• Surplus soil heap needs moving – Cllr Johnson to look at options
• £60 received for a memorial.

• Clerk’s Report and Correspondence:
• St Andrew’s Parish Church – a request that the name of payee on their cheque be changed to PCC Helpringham Parish.
• Tree Matters – Simpson Arboriculture had submitted the application for works within a conservation area.

The Clerk had received a quote from NKDC to join their tree inspection scheme.  It was agreed to pursue with this scheme but to defer the initial survey until March 2015 when the current report terminates.

• Noticeboard – Ordered and awaiting delivery.  Mark Walker of Network Rail had agreed to wait until the noticeboard had been installed before arranging the handover cheque.
• Circulating Notice of Meetings and Agenda – Electronic circulation is acceptable provided it is incorporated in the Standing Orders.  Current Standing orders cover this.
• Vegetation on Swaton Road Bridge – A work reference number had been obtained from Network Rail.
• Individual Electoral Registration – Details circulated
• Central Lincolnshire Local Plan – latest update circulated.  No comments
• LALC Training Courses – Anyone wishing to attend any of the circulated courses, please contact the Clerk.

Helpringham Vitality CLASS Needs YOU!

Vitality is a Lincolnshire based programme of exercise and movement to music classes for the over 60’s, subsidised by Lincolnshire County Council and approved by the NHS.

The classes focus on having fun with gentle seated and standing exercises set to music that aim to increase flexibility and strength whilst also improving posture and coordination.

Vitality is for men and women who want to exercise in a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere at low cost. Whatever your ability, our experienced, qualified instructor will make sure you exercise safely and have fun.

Helpringham Vitality takes place on Mondays between 1.30pm – 2.30pm at the Memorial Hall. 

There’s no need to book, just come along.  Your first class is FREE, then costs just £3.00 per class or £9.00 per month. Refreshments are provided after class.

It’s a great way to exercise and you’ll receive a warm welcome as well as feeling full of vitality afterwards. So come along and join us!

SOUTH LINCS SHADOWS MUSIC CLUB

After Pauline’s “View From the Kitchen” last month it’s back to my normal review this month.
Before the meeting I was wondering how many people would be there, considering it was in the middle of the holiday season. I was pleasantly surprised as we had a good turnout of regulars plus several visitors from as far afield as Woodhall Spa, Deeping St James and Scunthorpe!!
There was just time for the playing members to play 5 numbers each, and needless to say there was another good variety of both tunes and styles of playing.
What with the ample supply of refreshments (thanks again Pauline!) and the music it was another very enjoyable evening.
I would also like to thank those who help in setting up the tables and chairs before the meeting and clearing away afterwards - it makes such a big difference.
Meetings are held at the Memorial Hall on the first Wednesday of the month from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. Light refreshments are provided.
Entry is just £3 for players and £2 for non players.
Next meeting Wednesday 3rd September, why not come along and try it.

PETTICOAT CLUB NEWS

In August, members were treated to the entertaining Jennie Storr. Her stories of her parents meeting in 1943 in wartime London and their subsequent marriage had us all laughing with her and her memories.
As the only child of this “ice cream” and travel loving couple, Jennie experienced a life of interest and love all over the world from Tunbridge Wells to Tokyo and the United States.
Her mother a true English rose, introduced the Tombola, Jumble Sales and Mrs Beaton’s cook book to fund raising in rural America in her time as the Minister’s wife. Colonel and Mrs Wood gave their daughter a wonderful start to life, with their travels and belief that team work makes everything work.
This was delightful talk that was enjoyed by all.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 10th SEPTEMBER at 7.30pm.
Shona Smith will be demonstrating Autumn Flower Arrangements.
Everyone is welcome do come along and join us.
