NEWS FROM THE PEWS

A season for giving thanks
When looking around the hedgerows, our gardens, and of course the fields at this time of year one word cries out to us over and over again - Harvest. We see God's gift of reproduction within nature itself as plants, bushes and trees produce tempting fruit and berries for birds, animals and human beings to pick, eat, and spread around the seeds for next year's potential growth. With the production of such abundance that emerges within such a short space of time it's no wonder that this has become the traditional time of feasting and rejoicing as we enjoy the harvesting of such crops. It is also a time to give thanks for all the many blessings we have received through the year some as a reward for our labours but mostly as a gift from the unseen hand of God. As the old hymn says "count your blessings name them one by one and it will surprise you what the Lord has done". The harvest festival in the local church has traditionally been one of those occasions when the wider community has gathered to give thanks collectively. On Friday 4th October at 6pm Helpringham parish church provides just such an opportunity as we give thanks for the harvest. Even if you are not a regular church goer, it's still good to come and give thanks for your own blessings. The school will be coming to church the day before at 2pm on Thursday 3rd October to bring their own harvest gifts and sing some new harvest thanksgiving songs. Then on Saturday 5th October at 7pm the church has its annual harvest supper at the Memorial hall with an auction of produce afterwards. Tickets are required and cost £8 for adults and £4 for children.  Available from Marian & Vince Stocking (421395).  Look forward to seeing you there.

Pram Service & coffee Morning on Tuesday mornings
Sorry to report that due to the poor response to the Pram service and coffee morning that was being offered on Tuesday mornings at the church, (at the time of writing this article no one from the village has come to either for two weeks in a row) it seems clear that at present there is no point in continuing with something no one appears to be interested in. Perhaps it was the wrong time, or day, or idea, or time of the year? No worries.
The church wardens and I would like say thank you to all who helped with the tidy up in the church yard the other Saturday. The edges of the paths were tidied, gutters cleared out and windows cleaned. Well done.
Every blessing to you all.
Rev Chris      01529 460904

PETTICOAT CLUB NEWS

We took a step back in time at our September meeting when Laraine Wright entertained us with the fascinating story of Mary Tudor or “Bloody Mary” as she came to be known. Having been raised as a devout Catholic and cherished and adored as a child, she was banished and disinherited by Henry V111 in his desire to marry into the Protestant faith. The crown passed to a very young Edward V1 after Henry’s death but at the age of 37 yrs Mary reclaimed the right to the throne after he, in turn, died. This should have been her opportunity for a better life but having set her heart on marrying Philip of Spain, an unpopular and disastrous choice, she tried to convert all Protestants back to the Catholic faith by adopting a “Turn or Burn” policy. This resulted in many ordinary people being burnt at the stake and after her death their names were recorded in “Foxe’s Book of Martyrs”. This became the most read book in the land, after the Bible, hence the name “Bloody Mary”. Laraine managed to bring history back to life and we had a very enjoyable evening.

Our next meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 9th October when we will hear about the Butterfly Hospice. Do come along - there’s always a warm welcome for members and guests.

Forthcoming Event - We will be organising another charity coffee morning in November in aid of Heckington First Responders (LIVES) - tombola and raffle prizes would be much appreciated.

HELPRINGHAM AND DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB

September’s meeting was the Annual General Meeting and also the 10th Anniversary of the club in its present form. So after the usual reports from the committee and election of officers, we enjoyed a bit of a celebration. i.e. a drink and a piece of cake and a chance to socialise with each other.
October’s meeting will be addressed by Nicholas Watts who will talk about “Growing Vegetables Organically”
Don’t miss this October the 23rd in the Memorial Hall.

Regular Meetings are held in the Memorial Hall at 7.30.pm. Tea and Coffee is provided.
Visitors always welcome

HELPRINGHAM HISTORY SOCIETY

The Society would like to thank all those who helped with the exhibition of School Days in the church at the Feast this year, we were very grateful for all the photos etc. that were lent to us and it proved to be very popular with many visitors from inside and
outside of the village.
Our next exhibition will be in The Memorial Hall on
Remembrance Sunday 10th November, where we will be remembering our War heroes and celebrating the life of women and all who served at home during wartime. We would be grateful if any of you have memories or artefacts that you would like to share with us to add to our already sizable collection of wartime in Helpringham. We would love to hear from you. Contact Laraine on 421110 or Julie on 421265 or any other Society members

please telephone Laraine on 421110 or Julie on 421265. We look forward to hearing from you.
