The Memorial Hall continues to be a popular venue for our village clubs and societies and bookings for family occasions and events. As new people come into the village it is important that we all support these facilities and make even greater use of them to ensure that Helpringham continues to be a vibrant community in these difficult times.

NEWS FROM THE PEWS

WHAT NEXT?
Happy New Year to you all. It was encouraging to see so many in our churches over the Christmas Season. Thanks for coming.
With the frantic busyness of Christmas now over, the decorations packed away and all those who, like the wise men returning to their journey but perhaps changed by an encounter with the Christ child, it's good to reflect on the joys of the festive period and to think about 'what next'?
LENT & ASHES
In February the church season of Lent begins where we remember Jesus emerging from obscurity as a village carpenter to a wandering Rabbi and then onto being recognised for who he really was, the Son of God. On Wed 13th we literally mark the beginning of Lent with an Ashing service at St Andrew's Heckington at 7pm where those who want have the sign of the cross made on the foreheads in ash made from the burning of the left over palm crosses from last year mixed with holy oil. It symbolises a willingness to enter a time of fasting (40 days) in order to attune our hearts to the voice of God in prayer as Jesus did in the wilderness after his baptism. It's alright having good ideas but unless they originate from God they will achieve nothing. This is the spiritual truth that Jesus lived all those years ago.
'CHOCOLAT'
To aid our reflections and Lent disciplines we are feasting on 'Chocolat'. The film starring Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Alfred Molina and Juliette Binoche is full of theology as well as being a wonderfully entertaining story. Hilary Brand has written a Lent Course entitled 'Christ and the Chocolaterie' to aid our reflections on the film and its challenging message. There will be full showing of the film at the Wesleyan Reform Chapel on Eastgate in Heckington on the evening of Shrove Tuesday 12th February with pancakes served in the interval. Film starts at 7pm and is a 12 certificate. All are welcome. Then the course starts the following week on Wednesday 20th at 7pm and runs for five consecutive Wednesday evenings 7pm till 9pm. It includes watching clips from the film and a discussion around particular issues the film raises about the challenge of change in a community. If you want to join in you will be most welcome.

PETTICOAT CLUB NEWS
We had a musical theme to our January meeting when Jim McQuaid came along to tell us about the Sleaford Concert Band which he started in 1998. Having had an 18yr career with the RAF band at Cranwell, progressing through the ranks to drum major and conductor, he moved into teaching music and now, as an advanced teacher, he also teaches teachers. This proved very useful when faced with the challenge of forming a band from a small group of like-minded people who just wanted the opportunity to play together. This small group has now burgeoned into a 50 piece orchestra with 80 musicians on the books. They come from all walks of life and their ages range from 8 to 80! Their regular concert programme is very popular and well supported and although a charity themselves, they also raise money for other worthy causes. At the end of the evening we also got the opportunity to listen to a short selection of music recorded ‘live’ at last year’s Poppy Concert. All in all, it was a very interesting and enjoyable evening.

Our next meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday13th February when Ruth Andrews will be returning, with a talk entitled “Weird and Wonderful”.  New members and guests are always welcome so do come along and join us.

Just a quick reminder of the AGM in March. Please come along and put forward your thoughts and ideas. We’re always looking for new things to try and would welcome your views. We also need people to help on the Committee so if anyone is prepared to have a go we would be very grateful for your support. Please think about it - it’s not an onerous task and we try and make it fun!

HELPRINGHAM AND DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB
In November
Janette Merilion from Billinghay not only entertained us with stories about the various plants and shrubs used for decoration at Christmas, she also showed some spectacular slides. The effects of sunlight through frost transformed even the most basic of plants. It was a truly memorable show and gave us all ideas for filling our borders with sculptural plants and flowers as well as giving us lots of information about plant origins and customs.
Next Meeting is on February 27th when Tony Boughen from Bicker will talk about Gardening for Birds.
Last year Tony gave a lovely photo tour and talk on Kew Gardens. This time he has lots of ideas for making your garden more wildlife friendly.

HELPRINGHAM HISTORY SOCIETY
The Society would like to thank all those who helped us mount the "Sporting Helpringham" exhibition in St. Andrew's Church over the Feast Weekend. It was amazing to see how many people in Helpringham have had sporting success and we hope all those who attended found it enjoyable and interesting.
We are already planning the exhibition for next year's Feast "School Days" so please keep this in mind and look out your old school photos, artefacts and stories. This will include not just those educated in Helpringham but everyone. We ALL have school memories.
On Remembrance Sunday this year we will once again be remembering our war heroes at the Memorial Hall and would welcome any information or artefacts you may have to add to our already sizable collection, including all conflicts since the Second World War where our heroes have served and died.
The Society is now starting work on its next project "Buildings and People of Helpringham". To help with this we are seeking information on all buildings in the village and knowledge of previous ones. If you can help with this we would love to hear from you. Contact Laraine on 421110 or Julie on 421265 or any other Society members.

DARBY AND JOAN CLUB

The Darby and Joan Club Annual General Meeting will be held in the Memorial Hall on Thursday March 14th at 2.p.m. The club requires volunteers to take on the position of Secretary and Chairman to be able to continue. Anyone interested please contact Alison 421478 or Margot 460923.
