RAILWAY MODIFICATIONS

A team from Network Rail were in Helpringham on 10 July to give a presentation to the parish about the work being done on the GNGE line (also known as the Redwing line) which connects Peterborough to Doncaster via Lincoln.
At £280m the GNGE modernisation is one of the largest transport projects currently being undertaken in England, and when completed will provide increased capacity (up to two additional trains per hour in each direction at peak times), faster train times, quieter and smoother journeys, and safer crossings.
Although the main impetus for the work is a need to provide an alternate route for some of the freight traffic on the East Coast Main Line, the upgrade work provides a number of opportunities for Lincolnshire itself, and communities along the route, to benefit from the modernization of the line. These opportunities include the possibility of additional passenger services and the development of a regional freight hub to give food producers a faster and more direct link to European markets.
The project has already involved considerable work in Helpringham – including renewal of the bridges on Burton Road and South Fen Road.  At the request of the Parish Council, the Network Rail team undertook a site visit to both these bridges with Council members before the presentation took place.
Having listened to your concerns about the bridges, Network Rail have undertaken to liaise with Lincolnshire County Council to try and resolve a number of the issues, including installing road signage, narrowing pavements, and introducing lane markings.
[The parish council was most concerned about the Burton Road bridge and we hope that there will be improvements there.]

A big thank you to all of our performers at the recent Strawberry Concert which went with a real swing and was enjoyed by everyone who attended.  A thank you also to all the ladies who prepared and served the strawberry tea and to all those who helped with the backstage activities, raffle and selling tickets.  The evening raised the magnificent sum of £650 to be used for repairs and the upkeep of the church.

PETTICOAT CLUB NEWS

At our last meeting in July members were given a talk by Nick and Ros Loweth from Abbey Parks Farm Shop at East Heckington.
The couple came to the farm in 1987 and started from small beginnings, growing asparagus. Waiting nearly three years for the first cut they then took their crop to London and began supplying the big restaurants.
They built the Farm Shop in 2002 and have gone from strength to strength. Their dream was to promote their own and local produce.   The café and delicatessen are doing well and themed evenings and other events are now on the agenda. All their three children are involved in the business and will take it forward in the future.

Our next meeting is on August 14th with a talk from Caroline Bain on “Footcare”.

Do come along and join us. There is always a warm welcome for new members and guests.

HELPRINGHAM AND DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB

June Meeting Wednesday 26th June.
Working with Willow

Jessica Notley showed us how to weave willow into framework and everyone tried to have a go.
We all managed to twist a circlet too, which can be more difficult as the willow needs to be forced into the shape. However, it promoted lots of discussion and a fair amount of laughter and time -as they say" just flew."

July Meeting Sunday 21st July
The Annual Garden Trail
started at the garden of
Alan and Judith Forrest in Station Road where a rose garden is in progress and various other plans were discussed. Members then proceeded to Adrian Pearce's garden on The Green. This shows what can be achieved from many years of patient work. It is a triumph of horticultural dedication. Afterwards, members joined the other village organisations in the Memorial Hall for afternoon tea.

August Meeting Wednesday August 28th
Alan Bycroft will talk about Foraging

Regular Meetings are held in the Memorial Hall at 7.30.pm. Tea and Coffee are provided
Visitors always welcome
