NEWS FROM THE PEWS

Happy Easter, Christ has risen! This Easter season heralds the start of my second year in this group of parishes, a time of promise, hope and new life.
On 1st April we celebrate that new beginning which Christ won for us with an informal service that retraces one of the first resurrection stories - The Walk to Emmaus. For those who would like to join us we a meet at Howell church on Easter Monday at 2pm to walk across to Asgarby church where there will be a short informal service at 3pm. The Easter window at St Andrew's Asgarby depicts the story where the risen Jesus appeared to two dejected disciples on their way out of Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus. Although he spends the entire journey with them unrecognised, their eyes are suddenly opened to the identity of their mystery travelling companion when they invite him to say grace at their evening meal together. As he holds up the bread, blesses and breaks it, they perhaps see the scars in his wrists and hear the distinct and familiar words he may have always used on such occasions and realise who it is before them, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary once again. Overjoyed they run back to Jerusalem to tell their friends and fellow disciples. Jesus is not dead but alive. That news continued to travel until the entire world was turned upside down with its implications, that God was, and still is with us, but although we failed to recognise his presence, it's not too late to embrace the power to transform any life - The Love of God.
We will be celebrating the offer of that love by breaking and enjoying a home baked community loaf together and, unlike last Easter, this year we have a brand new roof at Asgarby to keep us dry even if it does rain. There will also be an Easter bonnet competition with an Easter egg for the best decorated hat. All are welcome.
On 17th April a new series of discussion evenings start at the Wesleyan Chapel, Eastgate in Heckington. Called 'JUST 10' each of the ten sessions looks at one of the Ten Commandments asks how such an ancient code for living thousands of years old is relevant to us today. Like ALPHA, after a 'bring & share' meal at 7pm, we will be listening to a talk on DVD, this time by J. John, who is a gifted and amusing speaker, and then each talk there will be an opportunity for personal views and opinions to be discussed in an open atmosphere of respect. Each session will finish at 9pm and is being run by Churches Together in Heckington. Once again all are welcome. Come and see and share.
Every blessing
Rev 'Capt' Chris

PETTICOAT CLUB NEWS
Our AGM was held in March and the Chairman was pleased to report another successful year. Special thanks went to Sally Woodhead, who has again audited our accounts free of charge, to the Committee for their help and to all members for their continued support. As well as enjoying a varied programme of speakers and activities an amount of £400 was raised for the Heckington First Responders through the annual charity coffee morning. The Treasurer reported a healthy bank balance, despite increases in speaker's fees. It was decided to maintain the annual subscription at £5 and to set the meeting fees at £2.
The existing Committee stood down. Jackie Mann proposed the vote of thanks especially to Audrey Moxon and Wendy Johns who as Chairman and Treasurer had worked so hard over so many years and were standing down. Gill Grace and Marian Stocking were elected as the new Chairman and Treasurer, Joyce Drake will continue as Secretary with assistance from Laraine Wright.
The evening was rounded off with entertaining and amusing poetry readings from Joan Hotchkin and Rosemary Bailey to everyone's delight.
This year's programme begins with a talk by Maureen Sutton "Customs and Seasonal Easter Fare" on WEDNESDAY 10TH APRIL AT 7.30pm. We’d love to see as many of you as possible there. New members and guests and new ideas are always welcome. DO COME ALONG AND JOIN US.

HELPRINGHAM AND DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB
In February
Tony Boughen from Bicker told us how to make our gardens more wildlife friendly.
With the aid of some very clear and attractive slides, Tony showed us how to make our own bird bath from a dustbin lid, or a washing up bowl. He emphasised the importance of water near to food and showed how the great English trees, Oak, Ash and Hawthorn were all filled with insects which would encourage birds to live nearby.
This month's Meeting is on April 24th and Andy Tasker will give us all tips on how to make the best and most attractive
HANGING BASKETS

Visitors welcome £2.00 per head per meeting.
Meetings Start at 7:30pm in the memorial Hall, tea and biscuits provided.

HELPRINGHAM HISTORY SOCIETY
The Society would like to thank all those who helped us mount the "Sporting Helpringham" exhibition in St. Andrew's Church over the Feast Weekend. It was amazing to see how many people in Helpringham have had sporting success and we hope all those who attended found it enjoyable and interesting.
We are already planning the exhibition for next year's Feast "School Days" so please keep this in mind and look out your old school photos, artefacts and stories. This will include not just those educated in Helpringham but everyone. We ALL have school memories.
On Remembrance Sunday this year we will once again be remembering our war heroes at the Memorial Hall and would welcome any information or artefacts you may have to add to our already sizable collection, including all conflicts since the Second World War where our heroes have served and died.
The Society is now starting work on its next project "Buildings and People of Helpringham". To help with this we are seeking information on all buildings in the village and knowledge of previous ones. If you can help with this we would love to hear from you. Contact Laraine on 421110 or Julie on 421265 or any other Society members.
