NEWS FROM THE PEWS byRev Chris Harrington   01529 460904
THANKS FOR THE HARVEST
The harvest season has now drawn to a close and after 8 harvest suppers I must now go on a bit of a diet. Many thanks must go to all who brought tinned and fresh produce to the churches to either auction off at the suppers or go to the community larder at Sleaford or Centrepoint at Boston. The churches were beautifully decorated so thanks to all who helped with that and also with preparing the wonderful harvest suppers which everyone enjoyed. The auctions were fun and many picked up a real bargain as well as there being a spirit of generosity in the price of other items. All were well attended community events which helped make bringing in the sheaves go with a swing.
WAS THAT A HORSE IN CHURCH?
The Pet service at Asgarby was well attended by about 15 dogs, 6 guinea-pigs, 1 hamster, 1 rabbit, 1 goldfish and a horse, all in church. John our organist could hardly hear himself during the first hymn as all the animals seemed to be joining in with their own praise. A great time was had by all. The children all wanted to do it again next week but unfortunately will have to wait until next year.
MEMORIAL SERVICES
On Sunday 4th November there will be two memorial services to remember our loved ones who have passed away - 4pm at St Andrew's Helpringham & 6pm at St Andrew's Heckington. It will be a simple service of four well known hymns interspersed with readings and then as the names of loved ones are read out there will be an opportunity to come and light a candle in their memory. It is open to all who want to remember their loved ones in this way and is a very lovely and moving service. Refreshments will be served afterwards and all are welcome. The service in Heckington is being led by representatives of all three Heckington churches and we hope it will be an annual event. If you want the names of your loved ones read out please contact Rev Chris at the Rectory.
REMEMBRANCE DAY
There will be a service of Remembrance at both Helpringham and Heckington at the village green war memorials at 10.45am on Sunday 11th November. The short service and act of remembrance will be followed by services in both parish churches to which all are invited. The church services will be child friendly and led at Helpringham by John West and at Heckington by Rev Ann Lett & Rev Chris Harrington. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

PETTICOAT CLUB NEWS
It was laughter all the way again at our last meeting when Sue Cadman returned to entertain us with Part 2 of her Life in Show Business. For those who missed her first visit she gave a quick recap of how she became one of Les Dawson’s Roly Polys, the initial 6 week run turning into a mammoth 28 year stint! Her talk centered on her hilarious experiences and escapades during this time particularly whilst on tour around the provinces. From costumes to accommodation her amusing anecdotes kept us in stitches and we look forward to the next installment!

Charity Coffee Morning - Tuesday 13th November 10am to 12 noon
Once again Gill is hosting the event at Anvil Cottage, 12 The Green in aid of L.I.V.E.S. (Heckington First Responders).  Don’t miss out on an opportunity to catch up with friends and support such a good cause. £3.00 to include light refreshments (pay at the door). Raffle and tombola prizes would be much appreciated.

A quick reminder that we will be having our usual cake stall at the Christmas Bazaar in the Memorial Hall on Saturday 1st December 10am to 3pm. We would be very grateful for donations of your lovely cakes, pies or biscuits.

Our next meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 14th November when Tracey Bates will be coming along to talk to us about all the exciting things that she’s taken up and achieved since being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Do come along - new members and guests are always welcome.

HELPRINGHAM AND DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB
The Annual General Meeting was held on September 26th 2012. -
The retiring Chairman, Feed Jervis, and his wife, loan, were unable to attend but his work as founder and then Chainman for 9 years was recorded and appreciated. He and Joan were granted free membership for life and a flower arrangement was taken to Joan.
Irene West also retired from the Committee as Treasurer. She had taken over from her husband, John. In their absence on holiday, they were thanked by the Club for their work and presented with a token for £20 which they donated to the Church to pay for a new Jubilee Tree, the original having died.
The main concern was that the Club Committee was reduced to three members! However, the next item on the programme was Election of Committee.
No one volunteered to be Chairman.
BUT Lindsay Cousland agreed to continue as Treasurer and Marian Molloy agreed to continue as Secretary. Rosemary Bailey agreed to continue supplying the newsletter and to run the Social Evening and we welcomed three new members, namely Kay Dockree, Judith Forrest and Marion Stocking.
Non-Committee members who have agreed to continue their help are Barbara Laidlaw who runs the Raffle and Nick Drake who audits our accounts.
So all is well for the next year! Already we have received subscriptions from 26 members and hope to receive the rest before too long.
At the first meeting of the above Committee and using information sent in by members as to what they would like to hear about and where they would like to go, a programme has been drawn up which should provide a varied and lively set of meetings and outings for 2013.
Next Meeting: Wednesday November 28th 7.30.p.m.
Christmas Crackers with Janet Merilion explaining the traditions behind holly wreaths on front doors and ideas for gifts and the garden at Christmas.
Come along! Everyone Welcome.

HELPRINGHAM HISTORY SOCIETY
The Society would like to thank all those who helped us mount the "Sporting Helpringham" exhibition in St. Andrew's Church over the Feast Weekend. It was amazing to see how many people in Helpringham have had sporting success and we hope all those who attended found it enjoyable and interesting.
We are already planning the exhibition for next year's Feast "School Days" so please keep this in mind and look out your old school photos, artefacts and stories. This will include not just those educated in Helpringham but everyone. We ALL have school memories.
On Remembrance Sunday this year we will once again be remembering our war heroes at the Memorial Hall and would welcome any information or artefacts you may have to add to our already sizable collection, including all conflicts since the Second World War where our heroes have served and died.
The Society is now starting work on its next project "Buildings and People of Helpringham". To help with this we are seeking information on all buildings in the village and knowledge of previous ones. If you can help with this we would love to hear from you. Contact Laraine on 421110 or Julie on 421265 or any other Society members.

DARBY AND JOAN CLUB

The Darby and Joan Club meet in the Memorial Hall on Thursday November 8th at 2.00pm.  The nurse will be in attendance to give Flu vaccinations from 2.00pm to 3.00pm.  Please ring surgery 460213 to book your Vaccination at Helpringham.
November 22nd the club will be going to Helpringham Primary School for lunch and entertainment by the School Choir afterwards.
The Darby and Joan Club Xmas Lunch will be held on Tuesday December 4th.  There will be a club meeting on Thursday 6th December 2.00pm for cake, wine and carols.
2013 AGM will be held in March.
The Members and Committee thank everyone who has supported the club over the past year, and
wish you all Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
