MEMORIAL HALL NEWS

2012. WHAT A YEAR!!! From drought to deluge, from calamities to celebrations, we have seen it all and still prosper, thanks to your support.
How can we forget that lovely weekend when the rain held off and so many of you came to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, the garden of the Memorial Hall alive with smiles and the bunting fluttering on the Green and everywhere else too. Spring Fair, the Dedication of our new vicar, Harvest Supper, Quiz Night, the Farewell to the Bamfords, and Remembrance Sunday all so well supported and enjoyed by so many of you.
Our regular clubs and some new ones have also supported us and an increased number of you are using our renovated venue for your family occasions which is very pleasing.
The Management Committee wishes to thank everyone who has supported us in whatever way, volunteering help for events, grants, donations, or supporting all the activities. We really appreciate it. There are too many of you to name but please be assured that you are all highly valued as without the support from all of you we would not be able to sustain and continue to improve this village facility.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year and look forward to seeing everyone in 2013.
Don't forget to check the Hall diary for all upcoming events and our clubs.

NEWS FROM THE PEWS
During autumn, the copper beach tree in our Rectory garden was ablaze with colour, such a shame it all had to blow away with the November winds. Things never stay the same, the seasons come and go. As in nature, so in the Church the seasons are changing too. As we leave the reflective season of All Souls and Remembrance, we begin to look forward to the joy of the Christmas and the celebrations of the coming of the Christ child into the world and God dwelling among us. In preparation for that joyous season we first go through the penitential season of Advent (symbolised in the liturgical colour of purple as in Lent) reminding ourselves that one day God promises that his son Jesus will come again, not as the vulnerable baby in the manger, but as Lord and King and judge of all. So many of the stories that Jesus later told posed the question - when the Master returns will he find his servants prepared? A question like 'Are you ready to meet your maker?' may seem a bit heavy in the run up to Christmas but it was the constant message of the prophets in the run up to the very first Christmas - be prepared.
Eventually of course waiting and preparation gives way to the arrival and the joy of Christmas. The message that God so loved the world that he sent his only son so that whoever believes and receives him will come to know the joy of a personal relationship with God is one that remains good news year after year. I hope you will take the opportunity to join in the various celebrations of Christmas as we revisit the exciting story of the creator of the universe living within human limitations, becoming vulnerable to harm, being cared for and rescued by a poor tradesman and his teenage bride as they are guided by dreams and visions of angelic messengers. Jesus remains the reason for the season and the reason to come back to church after Christmas too. You are always welcome.
Have a Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.
Rev Captain Chris, 10 Cameron Street, Heckington (460904)

PETTICOAT CLUB NEWS
November’s meeting gave us a chance to say ‘thank you’ to all who’d supported the charity coffee morning for LIVES and to Gill who’d once again hosted the event at Anvil Cottage. We had lots of fun and raised £409 for a very good cause in the process.
We also welcomed Tracey Bates who came along to talk to us about Multiple Sclerosis and her achievements since being diagnosed. Although wheelchair bound, in 2007 she managed to help crew a tall ship, Tenacious, on a 390 mile trip from Falmouth to Liverpool, stopping off in Ireland along the way.  During the voyage she shared the day to day tasks with other crew members and completed a sponsored mast climb to a height of 40ft with able bodied help. Prior to this her taste for adventure prompted her to undertake a sponsored Skydive over Lincolnshire which looked amazing. She also gave us an insight into the illness itself (MS) and its symptoms which made the talk all the more inspiring.  It also helped us to understand the problems faced by Tracey and other MS sufferers.
A quick reminder of two important dates coming up……..
Sat 1st December - Christmas Bazaar in the Memorial Hall 10am to 3pm. Homemade cakes, pies or biscuits for our usual cake stall would be much appreciated.
Wed 12th December - Get into the Xmas spirit with the Wednesday Singers who will be coming along to entertain us at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall. Join us for a selection of songs, mulled wine, sausage rolls and homemade mince pies. Always lots of fun. Tickets £3.50, pay at the door. All welcome.

HELPRINGHAM AND DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB
Go out to your garden and see whether you have therein Comfrey, Caraway. Corn on the Cob. Cabbage, Cleaver and Couch.
You will probably have at least two of these unintentionally. But before you rush to pull them up, know these things: - Comfrey's old-fashioned name was Knitbone and it is very good for sprains if you either bind its leaves around the affected part or soak bandages in the juice from boiling it and bind them in the same manner.
Caraway tea is good for dyspepsia. The silk from Corn cobs helps with kidney troubles. A cabbage leaf (particularly Savoy) can ease a boil or carbuncle. Bind the rough side over to draw out the infection and then turn to the smooth side to heal. A tablespoon of Cleavers in hot water, strained and allowed to cool, will be of great benefit to cystitis sufferers and the same goes for Couch root.
Freya Trotman held us enthralled with her simple remedies handed down from grand- and great-grandparents some of whom were of Romany stock. Use the roots of Solomon’s Seal or Lily of the Valley to ease bruises. Whisk up egg whites and paint them over broken skin, like bedsores or blisters.
Freya uses beeswax as a basis for her ointments and uses the petals from flowers to lend colour. Some Doctors are hostile but others refer patients to her when ordinary remedies fail.
Some hospitals use honey bandages, others won't touch them.
Everyone felt that hospitals would be more successful if they were kept clean and sterile like they used to be.

There will not be a meeting in December
So Merry Christmas to everyone and A Happy New Year to you all
Next Meeting: Wednesday January 23rd  7:30 p.m.
The Social Evening
Come along! Bring a friend! Everyone Welcome!

HELPRINGHAM HISTORY SOCIETY
The Society would like to thank all those who helped us mount the "Sporting Helpringham" exhibition in St. Andrew's Church over the Feast Weekend. It was amazing to see how many people in Helpringham have had sporting success and we hope all those who attended found it enjoyable and interesting.
We are already planning the exhibition for next year's Feast "School Days" so please keep this in mind and look out your old school photos, artefacts and stories. This will include not just those educated in Helpringham but everyone. We ALL have school memories.
On Remembrance Sunday this year we will once again be remembering our war heroes at the Memorial Hall and would welcome any information or artefacts you may have to add to our already sizable collection, including all conflicts since the Second World War where our heroes have served and died.
The Society is now starting work on its next project "Buildings and People of Helpringham". To help with this we are seeking information on all buildings in the village and knowledge of previous ones. If you can help with this we would love to hear from you. Contact Laraine on 421110 or Julie on 421265 or any other Society members.

DARBY AND JOAN CLUB
The Darby and Joan Club Xmas Lunch will be held on Tuesday December 4th.  There will be a club meeting on Thursday 6th December 2.00pm for cake, wine and carols.
2013 AGM will be held in March.
The Members and Committee thank everyone who has supported the club over the past year, and
wish you all Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
