HELPRINGHAM POOR'S LAND CHARITY
The committee of HPLC will be conducting their annual review of eligible recipients for the Christmas payments at their meeting in early October. In the past the committee has relied on their local knowledge of members to keep the list updated. This has sometimes resulted in eligible parishioners being missed off the list. So if there are parishioners who think they meet the criteria and were not on the list in 2011 could you please let us know.
The criteria for inclusion on the list are: you have been a resident of the parish for 5 years or more and are eligible for the state retirement pension (only one payment per household). We require any additions before 1st October 2012.
My address is Bridgeway, 35 Highgate, Helpringham.

NEWS FROM THE PEWS byRev Chris Harrington   01529 460904
Weather permitting it looks a busy August with lots of events happening across our group of parishes. From Friday 10th to Sunday 12th August it’s the Helpringham Feast Weekend. The weekend kicks off on the Friday evening with a concert by Vintage Brass at 7.30pm in Helpringham Church. Tickets are £8 which includes cheese & biscuits and a glass of wine. It promises to be a good evening out with music and poetry readings and good company (Tickets from John West 421871). The weekend finishes with a special Songs of Praise service on the Sunday evening at 6pm featuring two choirs and the brass ensemble from Spalding Grammar School.
On Monday 13th August I have organised a day pilgrimage to Walsingham in Norfolk. The cost is £20 which includes the coach and lunch at the new refectory at Anglican Shrine. Coach leaves Heckington Church at 9.30am and returns about 8pm, a pick up at other villages may be possible if enough interest in the trip. It is a quaint old village, and the new landscaped Shrine gardens are very peaceful. Call Rev Chris to book a place or for more details (460904).
On Saturday 18th August there is a Garden Fete in the Rectory garden at 10 Cameron Street Heckington from 2pm till 5pm with stalls run by each of the 8 churches in the new group of parishes. Do come along and have some fun.
On Saturday 25th August Asgarby celebrate the completion of their new church roof (after the last one was stolen last year) with a crafts day and Table Top Sale from 10am till 2pm.
Then on Thursday evening 30th August at 7.30pm the Bishop of Lincoln is coming to rededicate the new roof at Asgarby at a service of Evening Praise. We hope the group choir will be able to join us and there will be refreshments afterwards.  Do come and support one of the smallest church communities in our group of parishes and have a look at the medieval wall paintings. However you spend your summer, take some time to smell the roses.

PETTICOAT CLUB NEWS
Valerie and Richard Oliver joined LIVES in October 2010 and were immediately invited to take part in a fundraising challenge - a trek to the top of Kilimanjaro, at 19,340 ft the world’s highest free-standing peak!  Having followed a strenuous training programme which included daily walks of 6-8 miles extending to 20 miles at the weekend, the Seabank Marathon from Skegness to Boston and a climb to the summit of Snowdon in the pouring rain, they finally arrived at Kilimanjaro Airport in Sept 2011 ready to tackle the Limoshow Route which would lead them to the summit in 7days. Together with 12 other members of the group and 56 porters they set off on their trek through an ever changing landscape and climate.  The lush rainforests at the start gradually gave way to a barren volcanic landscape as the altitude increased; passing glaciers along the way they finally reached the ice cap at the peak. The porters looked after them well but their tented accommodation and limited rations were a challenge in themselves! It was an arduous journey but a truly wonderful experience and the group raised £23,000 for a very worthy cause in the process.

Our next meeting is at 7.30pm on Wednesday 8th August when Laraine Wright will be talking to us about the Helpringham History Society, something of interest to us all. Do come along, new members and guests are always welcome.

HELPRINGHAM AND DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB
On Sunday, June 17th the Gardeners paid their annual visits to gardens in the Village. The day began bright and sunny but the afternoon grew darker and grey clouds were gathering. Nevertheless some 20 members visited Michael and Michelle Wakelyn's and John and Audrey Moxon's lovely gardens in New Street and then either on foot or by car made their way up to Highgate House, home of Frank & Rosemary Bailey, to "look at how the small holding is progressing." As they gathered together at the front of the house, the rain began. Members collected on the patio under the sunshade but soon migrated indoors as the rain came down in earnest. Only a small party walked round the field to see the vegetable plots before joining everyone for a cup of tea, some cake and a good gossip inside. Let us hope that next year's weather will be more clement.  It could hardly be worse than this year's!
The August outing will be a trip to Gunby Hall.
Members are reminded that the Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th September 7.30. p.m. in the Memorial Hall
Please do your best to attend

HELPRINGHAM HISTORY SOCIETY
During the Feast Weekend of 11th/12th August the Society will be presenting an exhibition of "Sporting Helpringham" in St Andrew's Church celebrating this Olympic Year. Do visit and see how sport has played such an important part in the lives of Helpringham's people over the years and the heroes that have lived in our village. If you have anything you think might help us with this exhibition please contact either Julie on 421265 or Laraine on 421110.

We are also beginning work on our next publication which will feature Buildings and People of Helpringham and again are looking for any help you may be able to offer.

DARBY AND JOAN CLUB
